Hyvönen describes the evolution of semantic cultural-heritage portals from aggregation and browsing toward research, interpretation and automated discovery. His iconic proposition is a three-generation model: first-generation systems harmonise and publish data, second-generation systems support human analysis, and third-generation systems use artificial intelligence to identify and address research problems under human-defined constraints. The theoretical contribution lies in repositioning Linked Data from a publication format to an epistemic infrastructure. Methodologically, the paper analyses semantic portals and identifies requirements for explainability, source criticism and integrated research tooling. The conceptual operation is infrastructural escalation: connected metadata becomes capable of generating new questions rather than merely retrieving known objects. The wider bridge reaches digital humanities, semantic computing, cultural analytics and AI-supported scholarship. Discovery becomes credible when machine inference remains traceable to sources, conceptual models and the interpretive standards of humanities research.
